There Are Some Fat Heart Throbs In The House!

While NO ONE will be turned away for lack of funds, Glory is a benefit for the 2021 Reclaim UGLY Healing Retreat and Transformative Imagination Conference: Our Bodies Are Wondrous Sites of Pleasure & Liberation happening May 28th – June 5th. A donation of ANY amount gets you a ticket. Please bring your electronic pocketbook, handkerchiefs, and your best swoon face as we collectively embrace the fattest love of all.

All income/donations we receive will go towards Event Accessibility, specifically:

  • Ensuring that we can offer discounted and scholarship seats to participants who might be otherwise priced out of the Reclaim UGLY Healing Retreat and Transformative Imagination Conference
  • Paying LGBTQIA+, POC, Fat, Sick, & Disabled Healers as: Keynotes, Panelist, Facilitators, Performers, and ASL Interpreters
  • Acquiring the most accessible online conference platform (we can afford) that will foster the interaction, connection, welcome, inclusivity, and ease you deserve.

Did you know that in 2020, Reclaim UGLY served over 1800 people at our No-One-Turned-Away-For-Lack-Of-Funds Events? We also managed to pay over 85 artists, healers, and performers – the majority of which identified as Working Class, Black, LGBTQIA+, Fat, Sick, and Disabled. When you support reclaim UGLY, you support our whole community!

Regardless of whether you are a small fat, mid fat, super fat, thin ally, or worshipper of fat people, you are welcome to parlay with us. Together, we will indulge in the delight, gifts, healing, magic, sexiness, romance, and decadence of fat creativity, expression, and activism. Come delve into the abundance of sweetness and connection with your community. All events will include ASL Interpretation and Live Automated Captioning.

Fat, Black Self Love Through The Ages – an improv performance

In October 2019, Vanessa Rochelle Lewis was invited to participate in a performance called “Bodies Like The Ocean,” which was hosted by the extraordinary and phenomenally talented artist, writer, scholar, and fat liberation activist Caleb Luna. This performance also featured renown fat artists Shoog McDaniel and Tricia Rainwater-Tutwiler – and family you must check out all of their extraordinary art, work, and writing. Your heart will thank you. The below clip features Vanessa’s contribution to the performance.

Fat People Deserve To Glorify Our Bodies

“Imagine if ‘fat’ weren’t considered such a bad word, with such ugly, unfair connotations. Imagine if fat people were free to openly embrace our own bodies with the same autonomy as people with other body types. Imagine if they—those who fear the normalizing of bodies like ours and use ‘fat’ as a weapon and a lament—did not so desperately and continually and pathetically seek to control not only our physicality but also our emotionality and attitudes towards our very selves.” – Author Sherronda J Brown. Brown, a facilitator of transformative self-love and imagination, wrote an epic ode to fatness and glory in her article, “Fat People Deserve to Glorify Our Bodies.” Please check out this quick and empowering read. You deserve this sweet tea. It also includes a series of quotes and short writings by a diversity of other fat, queer, BIMPOC writers (Black, Indigenous, & Mixed People of Color), including the below piece from Reclaim UGLY’s Founding Director, Vanessa Rochelle Lewis. The painting in this image was created by queer, Black visual artist, Gabrielle Wilson-Sealy, co-founder of Beyondeep Productions.
